Essex Court Chambers has been shortlisted in the Chambers of the Year category at The Lawyer Awards 2022.
The Lawyer Awards celebrate the best of the legal sector including the Bar and in-house legal community, establishing itself as a leading awards initiative.
During the last 18 months, members of Essex Court Chambers have been involved in many of the leading international commercial disputes in both litigation and arbitration, demonstrating the latest recognition as the ‘go to’ set for high value and complex matters. Earlier this year members of Chambers were highlighted in a report published by The Lawyer, ranking sets and firms according to the number of concluded judgments, case days and instructed individuals in the Commercial Court from 2015–2021. Essex Court Chambers topped the chart by a significant margin, with members appearing in a combined total of 330 concluded judgments during the 7 year period and is one of only two sets to break the 1,000-case-day barrier logging a total of 1,211 case days. This sheer volume and variety of disputes undertaken highlights the breadth and quality of work and showcases the depth of talent that is housed throughout Chambers.
Whilst not only topping the league in commercial litigation, Essex Court Chambers continues to dominate in the field of international arbitration with members regularly advising on and acting in arbitrations and disputes around the world. Essex Court Chambers was positioned at the top of the Who’s Who Legal Arbitration 2022 Leader Board with the highest number of listings at the Bar and won ‘International Arbitration Set of the Year’ at the Chambers and Partners UK Bar Awards in 2021. Additionally Chambers was awarded ‘Set of the Year’ by Who’s Who Legal in 2021.
Chambers growth was cemented in 2022 with six members of Chambers appointed Queen’s Counsel, after five members were appointed in 2021, an unprecedented eleven members of Chambers appointed Silk in two years. A number of new tenants joined following successful completion of their pupillages including Lorraine Aboagye, Katherine Ratcliffe, Akash Sonecha, Daniel Fox and Gretta Schumacher. To complement this organic growth, Chambers continues its focussed cross-recruitment, adding Ben Juratowitch QC and Paul Wee most recently to a list of high profile cross-recruits including Alison Macdonald QC, Sean Aughey, Angeline Welsh, Sophia Hurst and Christopher Lloyd together with leading academics Professor Paul Davies and Professor Dapo Akande.
Winners will be announced at a ceremony taking place on Tuesday 21 June at JW Marriott Grosvenor House London.
