The Lawyer Top Appeals of 2023

Two cases involving members of Essex Court Chambers are featured in The Lawyer’s Top 10 Appeals with proceedings set to be heard in court during 2023. The list includes cases with the most significant sums in dispute as well as disputes involving high profile parties or issues. The cases involving members of Essex Court Chambers are as follows:

The Rwanda appeal – AAA and others -v- Secretary of State for the Home Department

  • In the Court of Appeal, expected in April/May 2023
  • Edward Brown KC acting for the Home Secretary in the first to sixth and eighth proceedings.

Following the UK Government’s plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda and a number of judicial reviews that ended in the European Court of Human Rights, in December the High Court overturned the individual decisions for each of the eight claimants.

Maduro Board of the Central Bank of Venezuela v Guaidó Board of the Central Bank of Venezuela

Last September, Mrs Justice Cockerill granted an appeal in this long running and politically important case. The decision has the potential to affect all the citizens of Venezuela.
