Professional practice

Freddie has a busy commercial practice. He is regularly instructed in some of the most high profile and high value commercial disputes in the Commercial Court, including Navigator Equities Ltd v Deripaska [2020] EWHC 1798 (led by Nathan Pillow QC), and ArcelorMittal USA v Ruia & Others [2020] EWHC 3349 (led by Paul McGrath QC). Most recently, he was instructed in the 10-week trial of ENRC v Dechert & Serious Fraud Office (led by Clare Montgomery QC and Nathan Pillow QC) (one of The Lawyer’s Top 20 Cases of 2021). Freddie is particularly interested in civil fraud, and much of his work has a civil fraud angle.

Freddie acts regularly in High Court commercial employment matters, including applications for injunctive relief (Stroma Building Control v Barr & Others [2021] EWHC 239 (led by Daniel Oudkerk QC)). He appears frequently as sole advocate in the employment tribunal in unfair dismissal claims, as well as discrimination and harassment claims under the Equality Act.

Freddie also has a developing public law practice. He has advised on a number of public law matters, including human rights challenges, the Global Human Rights Sanctions Regulations 2020 (led by Dan Sarooshi QC), and on diplomatic and consular immunity. He is a member of the government’s junior juniors scheme, and has acted for the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office on a number of occasions.

Before coming to the Bar, Freddie was a Scholar at the University of Oxford, where he graduated ranked second in his year.

  • Instructed in a US$1.5 billion claim arising out of a disputed joint venture deal, under the HKIAC Rules.
  • Assisted in a JAMS arbitration arising out of the termination of a solicitor’s contract of employment.
  • Assisted in an LCIA arbitration arising out of the sale of a global security company.
  • Assisted in enforcement proceedings under s.101 Arbitration Act 1996 in respect of a $112m BIT Award [PAO Tatneft v Ukraine].
  • Assisted in advising on the prospects of an anti-suit injunction in support of an LCIA arbitration clause.
Civil fraud & asset recovery
  • Instructed in Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation Limited v Director of the Serious Fraud Office, a 10-week trial.

  • Freddie has a particular interest in crypto assets and crypto-related fraud. He is a member of CFAAR (the Crypto Fraud and Asset Recovery network)  and regularly gives talks on crypto frauds.
Commercial chancery disputes
  • Assisted in an application by the Charity Commission for England & Wales to intervene in proceedings which raise issues as to the charitable status of a number of NHS Foundation Trusts [Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust & Others v Derby City Council & Others].
Commercial dispute resolution
  • Instructed in a c. £1.5 billion unlawful means conspiracy claim [ArcelorMittal USA v Essar & Ors]
  • Instructed in a c. £70m claim for inducement to act in breach of contract and/or fiduciary duty, and misfeasance in public office [Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation Limited v Director of the Serious Fraud Office].
  • Involved in the preparation of written submissions for the Court of Appeal in relation to a claim under a series of investor introduction agreements [Blackstar v Cheyne Capital].
Company & insolvency law / corporate recovery
  • Assisted in advising on the governing law for substantial claims for breach of directors’ duties brought by a Russian incorporated company.

  • Acted in an application for injunctive relief arising out of claims for breach of confidence and restrictive covenants [Stroma Building Control v Barr & Others [2021] EWHC 239 (QB)].
  • Acted in a two-day unfair dismissal case [R Patel v IBM].
  • Instructed in a potential £1.5m claim for breach of a settlement agreement, arising out of the termination of an employment contract.
  • Instructed in an unlawful dismissal (redundancy) claim.
  • Assisted in a claim for an injunction restraining a former employee from departing from a contractually agreed script when describing his investment track record.
  • Assisted in a JAMS arbitration arising out of the termination of a solicitor’s contract of employment.

  • Assisted in preparation for a Court of Appeal hearing which raises issues as to the proper construction of a shareholders’ agreement of a Russian mining and metals company [United Company Rusal Plc v Crispian Investments Limited].
European law & competition
  • Assisted in enforcement proceedings under S.101 Arbitration Act 1996 in respect of a £127m New York Convention Award, which raised issues as to the effect of certain European sanctions regulations.
  • Assistant Editor of the European Human Rights Reports, published by Sweet & Maxwell.
Human rights & civil liberties
  • Advised on issues of consular immunity and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations 1963.
  • Assisted in advising on the Global Human Rights Sanctions Regulations 2020
  • Advised on the lawfulness of the impact of Universal Credit on recipients of Enhanced Disability Premium.
Insurance & reinsurance
  • Assisted in advising in respect of a possible claim for the total constructive loss of a vessel under the war risks clause of a marine insurance policy.
  • Assisted in advising insurers in respect of a potential claim for pollution liabilities caused by an oil pipeline leak, under a Bermuda Form insurance policy.
  • Assisted in a $30m marine insurance claim, in which the insurers made allegations of scuttling.
International trade, transport & commodities
  • Instructed in a carriage of goods claim arising out of the theft of a consignment of tyres.
  • Assisted in defending a £20m wrongful termination claim arising out of a contract for the provision of coach services [Dunn Motor Traction v National Express Limited].

  • Assisted in a US$10.75m claim arising out of the sale of an allegedly forged portrait by the Dutch Golden Age painter Frans Hals [Sotheby’s v Weiss Ltd].
