Simon Bryan QC and Sara Cockerill QC Appointed as Justices of the High Court

The members of Essex Court Chambers are delighted to announce the appointments of Simon Bryan QC and Sara Cockerill QC as Justices of the High Court. Simon Bryan is appointed with effect from 2 October 2017 and Sara Cockerill is appointed with effect from 1 November 2017. The Lord Chief Justice will assign the new Mr Justice Bryan and Mrs Justice Cockerill to the Queen’s Bench Division as nominated judges of the Commercial Court. Mr Justice Bryan will be sworn in by the Lord Chief Justice at 16.45hrs on 9 October 2017 and Mrs Justice Cockerill will be sworn in by the Lord Chief Justice at 16.45hrs on 1 November 2017.

Simon Bryan QC was called to the Bar by Lincoln’s Inn in 1988, became a member of Essex Court Chambers on completion of pupillage in 1989 and took silk in 2006. He was appointed as a Recorder in 2009, being authorised to sit in the Crown Court on the South Eastern and Northern Circuits. He was authorised to sit as a Deputy High Court judge in 2013 and has sat regularly in the Commercial Court and the Administrative Court. In 2013 he was elected as a Bencher of Lincoln’s Inn. In 2015 he was appointed Chief Justice of the Falkland Islands and other Overseas Territories.

Sara Cockerill QC was called to the Bar by Lincoln’s Inn in 1990, became a member of Essex Court Chambers on completion of pupillage in 1991 and took silk in 2011. She is the author of “Compelled Evidence in Civil Proceedings” (2012 OUP) and has been the editor of the Commercial Court and Arbitration sections of the White Book since 2011. She was authorised to sit as a Deputy High Court judge in 2016 and has sat regularly in the Commercial Court and the Administrative Court. She is a member of the committee which develops and monitors the Shorter and Flexible Trial Procedures.
