Johnny Veeder QC

11 March, 2020

It is with great sadness that the members of Essex Court Chambers share the news of Johnny Veeder’s untimely passing away on Sunday, 8 March 2020 after a long illness. Johnny died peacefully surrounded by his family.

Johnny’s loss to Chambers, to the Bar and the wider English legal community, and to the world of international arbitration and international law is inestimable. But, above all, it is as a friend and colleague to so many both in and out of Chambers, and as a man of the deepest humanity who always gave friendship and support to all, old and young, famous and unknown, that he will be missed.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Marie, Anne, Tabitha and Sebastian and all of Johnny’s family.

Toby Landau QC has written a fitting tribute to Johnny, which can be found here.

GAR has also published a tribute, which can be found here.

A charitable fund has been set up in the Johnny’s name for Pimlico Opera, a sister company of Grange Park Opera, which supports the arts in prisons and primary schools and of which Johnny was a huge supporter. Donations to the Johnny Veeder Fund can be made through a dedicated webpage, which also has a short tribute to Johnny, photos and a typically forthright but thoughtful piece that Johnny wrote about prisons for the Grange Park Opera programme book in 2019.

Any messages or letters can be sent to Marie Veeder c/o.
