At last night’s GAR Awards in Stockholm, Toby Landau QC of Essex Court Chambers was presented with the award for “Best lecture or speech of 2011” – for last year’s Freshfields lecture, “Saving investment arbitration from itself”.
Landau also collected, on behalf of all counsel involved in the case (including Paul Key and David Craig of Essex Court Chambers), the award for the “Most important published decision of 2011 in jurisprudential terms (published award or judgment): Jivraj v Haswani (Supreme Court of England and Wales).” Landau was one of the Silks instructed by Allen & Overy partner Richard Smith to represent the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in this landmark decision.
Nearly 250 arbitrators and practitioners gathered at the Grand Hotel in Stockholm for the annual awards ceremony. There were 11 awards in total – all but three decided by public vote, the others chosen by the GAR (Global Arbitration Review) team.
