Members of Essex Court Chambers will be hosting a seminar on climate change and international law, the first in a series of public international law seminars.

This first seminar will take place at 5:30pm next Thursday 17 November 2022 in the newly refurbished lecture theatre at The Honourable Society of the Inner Temple and will be followed by a drinks reception.

The following expert panel of speakers will discuss different perspectives on a common problem: climate change and what international law can do to rally to the crisis.

  • Amy Sander, barrister at Essex Court Chambers, will chair this session.
  • Catherine Amirfar, Co-Chair of Debevoise & Plimpton’s International Dispute Resolution Group, will discuss advisory opinions in the context of international legal obligations relating to climate change: The ICJ and ITLOS.
  • Professor Patrícia Galvão Teles, member of the United Nations International Law Commission and of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, will talk on the work of the ILC in relation to sea-level rise and international law.
  • Naomi Hart, barrister at Essex Court Chambers, will speak on the human right to a clean and healthy environment under custom and treaty.
