16 May, 2024

The Arbitration Bar of India (ABI) was launched last Saturday 11 May at a ceremony in Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, marking a milestone in India’s arbitration landscape.

Gourab Banerji SA has been appointed as the inaugural president of the ABI, alongside two honorary presidents: former Indian Supreme Court justice, Hemant Gupta, chair of the India International Arbitration Centre (IIAC); and the country’s solicitor general, Tushar Mehta.

Speaking at the ceremony, Gourab Banerji said “India has made tremendous progress in the arbitration landscape with arbitration being made time bound and courts becoming less interventionist. The inauguration of ABI marks the fruition of the idea to set up a dedicated arbitration bar.”

The launch of the ABI reflects the nation’s commitment to advancing dispute resolution practices through a dedicated bar of professionals created “to promote excellence, integrity, and innovation in arbitration practices.”
