Tariq Baloch joins Essex Court Chambers

7 October, 2024

Members of Chambers are pleased to announce that Tariq Baloch has joined Essex Court Chambers from today, Monday 7 October 2024.

Tariq has an established and extensive practice in international arbitration, public international law and commercial litigation with a particular focus on multi-jurisdictional and investor-state arbitrations. He acts and has acted for some of the world’s largest companies in high value complex disputes around the world. In recent years he has appeared in a number of high profile cases in the English courts about enforcement and state immunity, including the long running NIOC v Crescent dispute and, most recently, in leading Spain’s case in the Court of Appeal in Infrastructure v Spain (one of The Lawyer’s Top 10 appeals of 2024). In the same case earlier this year he appeared in the Court of Appeal resisting an application to make Spain’s appeal conditional on paying substantial security into court.

Tariq was called to the Bar in 2001 and has practised as a barrister since 2008. He has been recognised by his peers multiple times as a leader in the field of arbitration and arbitration- related court cases, most recently winning the 2024 International Arbitration Junior of the Year Legal 500 Award. He won the same award in 2019, and in 2022 won the Chambers & Partners award in the same category. Tariq is recommended in the legal directories as a leading junior for International Arbitration, Public International Law and Energy. In Chambers and Partners 2024 he is described as “An expert in international arbitration and public international law; a steady hand in high-pressure situations.” The Legal 500 2024 describe Tariq as “Super-smart, super approachable, straight-forward and is one of the few barristers with a strategic and tactical brain as well as book-smarts. He writes beautifully…and his advocacy is superb: logical, smooth, easy to follow and persuasive. One of the best advocates around.”

Senior Clerk Joe Ferrigno said “I am delighted to welcome Tariq as a new member of Essex Court Chambers. Tariq has an outstanding reputation and caseload, and we very much look forward to him joining and enhancing the capabilities of our market leading international arbitration team”

Tariq says “I am really excited to join Essex Court Chambers, whose members I am already working with on a number of cases. I very much look forward to developing the next stage of my career with its excellent clerking and business support teams and fellow members of chambers, many of whom remain leaders in the fields of arbitration, public international law and commercial disputes. I also feel fortunate to have spent my formative years at the bar at 3VB, where I leave behind many good friends and excellent colleagues with whom I will continue to work.”
