Following the popularity of our Pupillage Open Day in November 2025, we have decided to repeat that event in 2026, as well as to attend further events at various universities to give students an insight into life at the Commercial Bar (details of which will be publicised in due course). We are therefore not going to run our Student Open Day this year.
The application window for the Pupillage Open Day to take place in November 2026 is not yet open but at the bottom of the page is the information for last year’s event and this page will be updated when applications open for this year’s event (around September/October 2026).
Anyone interested in a career at the Commercial Bar may like to watch this Combar video on “Careers at the Commercial Bar” which includes two members of chambers, Owen Lloyd and Lorraine Aboagye, among other Combar members sharing their stories about their journey to the Bar and the work that they do.
The application window for Pupillage Open Day is now closed – future events will be advertised as and when they are available.
This event is aimed at those who are intending to apply for pupillage in the next round of pupillage applications, opening on the Pupillage Gateway in January 2026.
- The event will be held in person from approximately 6:30-8:30pm, and will include presentations from members of chambers on the benefits of pupillage and tenancy in chambers;
- chambers’ pupillage process; and
- what life is like as a member of chambers, including the range and quality of work available, social activities, work-life balance, and balancing work with non-legal interests (e.g. music or sport) and family life.
Attendees will also have an opportunity to socialise with members of chambers and ask any questions they may have in a friendly, informal atmosphere.
The evening is not assessed and forms no part of the pupillage application process.
Those interested in attending should provide a CV and a brief statement of no more than 50 words as to why they are considering applying for pupillage at Essex Court.
Please email your CV and statement to pupillage@essexcourt.net
