ECC-SAL International Mooting Competition 2016 – Winners Announced

Mr Devathas Satianathan and Miss Gek Min Yeo from the Singapore Justices’ Law Clerks Team A have won the prestigious Essex Court Chambers – SAL International Mooting Competition 2016.

This year’s competition included 22 teams of accomplished advocates from countries including Singapore, Brunei, Hong Kong, India and Malaysia, with the competition intended to give young lawyers (those who have been qualified for practice for under three years) the opportunity to showcase and hone their advocacy skills.

In the final round held at the Supreme Court of Singapore on 12 January 2016, the JLC Team A competed against a team from TSMP Law Corporation, consisting of Miss Reshma Nair and Mr Cephas Yee Xiang. The teams presented arguments about the validity of an alleged penalty clause as well as an issue regarding remoteness of damages in relation to a contract governed by English law. The arguments were presented before a distinguished judging panel comprising of Justice Vinodh Coomaraswamy, Mr. Gourab Banerji SA and Mr. Roderick Cordara QC.

The prize for Best Speaker in the competition went to Aleksandar Georgiev of Rajah & Tann in Singapore, whilst the prize for the best written submissions was awarded to a mixed team from KhattarWong and Morgan Lewis Stanford LLC, consisting of Kong Ying Jie Kenneth and Yong Manling Jasmine.
