Christopher Lloyd joins Essex Court Chambers

22 July, 2021

Members of Chambers are pleased to announce that Christopher Lloyd has joined Essex Court Chambers.

Christopher has a busy multi-jurisdictional modern commercial chancery practice with an emphasis on civil fraud and asset recovery claims. Christopher was called the bar in 2011 and joined Essex Court Chambers from Erskine Chambers on Friday 16 July 2021.

Christopher is a well-regarded junior with a noted expertise in high-value fraud disputes. He frequently appears in the High Court in freezing injunctions and other interim remedy applications and trials involving allegations of dishonesty or fraud. Most of his cases have an international element and many start in the English courts with applications for injunctive relief and permission to serve foreign defendants. He has acted in some of the largest civil fraud claims in the English courts in recent years, including PrivatBank v Kolomoisky, Vale v Steinmetz, Mezphrom Bank v Pugachev and BTA Bank v Ablyazov.

Christopher is recommended in the legal directories as a leading junior for Civil Fraud and Chancery Commercial. In Chambers and Partners 2020 Christopher is described as “very clever and a good lateral thinker (he) will think around the problem and come up with suggestions that others have not thought of.” The Legal 500 2020 describe Christopher as “Quite simply a terrific barrister… He combines exceptional intelligence, meticulous preparation and a very effective courtroom presence with a real willingness to muck in and work as part of a team.

Joint Heads of Chambers, Joe Smouha QC and Huw Davies QC stated: “We are delighted to welcome Christopher as a tenant of Chambers. Christopher is an exceptional talent and has been instructed in many of the largest commercial fraud cases in recent years. He is well-known to members of Chambers who have frequently worked alongside him. He is recognised as being one of the best commercial chancery and fraud junior practitioners at the Bar and his abilities will augment our first-class junior team. He will be a perfect fit and we look forward to working with him further in the future.”

Senior Clerk Joe Ferrigno said, “Christopher is already a well-recognised exceptional talent specialising in civil fraud disputes where Chambers holds a Band 1 ranking in the legal directories. We look forward to welcoming him and to continue to develop his high-profile practice.”

Christopher said “I am delighted to be joining Essex Court Chambers, where I hope to continue developing my international practice in civil fraud and commercial chancery disputes. I have worked with and appeared against many outstanding members of Chambers and I am looking forward to joining them as a colleague.”
